Don Gwinn

SCRA's Don Gwinn began by discussing the Buffalo Park Shooting Range Court Case.  (See story on page 10 June 2012 GunNews).

He also brought folks up to speed on the Moore and Shepherd gun cases which seek to strike down Illinois' prohibition on right-to-carry.  The state petitioned to have the cases consolidated, but were denied.

The state also applied for a long extension, with the idea of delaying the decision until well after the election.

If it is on a track to the Supreme Court, that will happen a little bit sooner and we'll have a decision a little bit sooner.  In general that's good for us.

As for right to carry in IL., Gwinn said we're still taking roll calls and negotiating to pick up additional supporters.

Its hard to know where we are with the Legislature.  He does still expect to have a vote this month but right now he wouldn't dare predict how its going to go.

Gwinn noted that we are working both in the legislature and in the courts to win right-to-carry for Illinois.  The sword cuts both ways with the court cases though.  There are going to be legislators who are going to say, "They have a good shot at winning in the courts.  We should give them this now so they don't have to face something worse when they win."

There are also legislators who would like to have the choice taken out of their hands and would like to say, "If they're going to win the case anyway, let the courts take the blame for it."

Don doesn't know where we are.  We'll have to get that vote and reevaluate after that.
