"GUN FREE" ZONE IS EASY VICTIM ZONE

Five Murdered, Many  Wounded in so-called "Gun Free" zone

March 2008 GunNews

Dekalb, IL (CCRA) - On Valentine's Day 2008, a gun-free zone at Northern Illinois University became a killing field for a disgruntled graduate stdent - who ignored the laws of Illinois and rules of the University to murder and wound as many as he could in two minutes, before taking his own life.

Of the 150 or more people in the auditorium that afternoon, none was legally armed.  llinois law makes no provision for non-law enforcement personnel to legally carry a sidearm.

Also, University policy prohibits (legal) guns on campus.  Even if Illinois had joined the other 48 states that have some provision to legally arm regular citizens, University policy would have prevented any person so permitted from carrying on campus.

The result; dead and wounded students.

Coincidenally (or perhaps not) no mass murders have taken place in recent memory at NRA conventions, gun shows, gun industry trade shows, police stations, or other venues where armed people congregate.

"Gun-free zones have given us nothing but body counts," said Alan M. Gottlieb of the Citizen's Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.  "This giant loophole in public safety is becoming a national disgrace and it is time to dramatically change our perspective on self-defense in this country."

In the Virginia Tech mass shooting last year, the state did have a right to carry law - but that law was inoperatve on University property by University decree, upon pain of expulsion.  None of the victims of that rampage had any chance to fight back.

The Northern Illinois University tragedy follows on the heels of another multiple kiling in the Chicago suburbs.  In Tinley Park Recently, an armed robber herded six women into the back of a Lane Bryant store, tied them up - and shot them.  One survived.  Under Illinois law, none were allowed to be legally armed.  The murderer, of course, ignored that law, along with the laws against armed robbery and murder.

CCRA will be joining other pro-gun groups in attending IGOLD, Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day, in Springfield on March 11.  IGOLD attendees will be lobbying their state legislators to abandon the anti-gun, anti-self-defense legislation pending before the Generaly Assembly, and instead adopt proven techniques to allow citizens a fighting chance against criminals and crazies with the adoption of right to carry legislation.
