![]() Campus Shooting at VA Tech
Letter to the Illinois State Journal

In reflecting upon the campus shooting at VA Tech, I was struck by the utter absurdity of Mayor R. Daley of Chicago's response. He intimated that the shooting was another example of too many guns on the streets of America. What it was in fact was yet another demonstration of the failure of the liberal policy of denying the means of self defense to honest law abiding citizens, and relying on the police to save those in peril. This event has proved yet again that this concept is deadly folly. Let us examine a common thread in school shootings. The shooter invariably takes his own life when faced by armed resistance. So long as he has unarmed and defenseless victims the rampage will continue. The tragic truth is that only when an armed response arrives on the scene do these sick persons show themselves to be the cowards that they are and take their own lives. Sadly Virginia, tried to pass a bill that would allow persons trained and certified to carry a weapon elsewhere in their state to also carry on campus. VA Tech opposed this bill and it was defeated. Perhaps if the armed response was from a professor or student already inside the building rather than waiting for SWAT to arrive and count the bodies after it was over, the count would have been much smaller. I write this as a teacher who sits in a building marked with "Gun Free Zone" signs. How nice of us to announce that our children are guaranteed to be without defense. I possess a permit to carry a concealed handgun in 17 states (Not IL ). I am trained, and background checked. I am allowed to protect your students with..... A sharpened pencil and Govt. sponsored dial-a-prayer, 9-1-1. Phil More from Phil Davis |
